Airlines Government - Policy Aviation policy: Panel meet remains inconclusive Our Bureau New Delhi, Jan. 3 The meeting of the Group of Ministers looking into the civil aviation policy remained inconclusive on Thursday. Sources said that the meeting was divided on the issue of lowering the norms for allowing more airlines to fly abroad. This is one of the issues which has to be firmed up before the policy can be finalised. While one Cabinet Minister is said to have been in favour of lowering the existing norms, at least two other Ministers were against the move. At the moment, the Government has mandated that an airline should have a fleet of 20 aircraft and completed five years of domestic operations before it is eligible for international flights. Now the feeling in some sections of the Government is that with the number of domestic airlines increasing and foreign airlines carrying a majority of Indians travelling abroad, the time was right to relax the existing norms for allowing more Indian carriers abroad. The meeting, which lasted about 30 minutes, then dispersed so that the Ministers could attend a Cabinet meeting which was held soon after. The 10-member GoM which is headed by the Minister for External Affairs, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, is expected to meet again next week.
