Nanotechnology, though perceived to be of modern origin, is in fact a very old subject which evolved naturally over a billion years and has become the most important topic of the present era, according to Prof. Robert Curl, Jr, a Nobel laureate.

He was delivering the keynote address at the plenary session on the subject at the Indian Science Congress here on Friday.

“Medicine is trying to use nanotechnology extensively and the latest application is in curing cancer. Tests done on mice have produced very good results,” he said.

He added that lot of pharma research was going on based on nanotechnology and “the dream of medical science is to provide targeted, patient-specific drugs. A dozen drugs based on nanotechnology are in the testing stage”.

However, he said, the question was whether nanotechnology was environ- ment-friendly and a definite answer could not be given at the present juncture.
