CPI(M) not for hiving off air traffic control from AAI

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Jan. 4 The CPI(M) on Friday asked the Government to suspend or postpone the proposal for hiving off Air Traffic Control from the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

In a letter to the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, the CPI(M) Polit Bureau member, Mr Sitaram Yechury, has said that any move at this stage to hive off AAI’s revenue generating wings would be totally counter-productive.

The letter points out that while AAI has not been given mini-ratna status despite the recommendations of Committee on Infrastructure, “a new proposal for the creation of a separate entity in the form of ATC Corporation appears to be at the advanced stage of consideration, which is likely to weaken AAI which otherwise is a result and-profit-oriented organisation.”

Stating that the proposal to hive off ATC from AAI was “not based on ground realities,” Mr Yechury said the Government was solely responsible for CNS, airspace management and airside infrastructure as in other countries.
