Golden Leaf India awards in Dubai

G K Nair

Kochi, Jan. 5 Enthused by the success of the previous three editions of The Golden Leaf India Awards: Southern Tea Competition (TGLIA: STC), the United Planters Association of South India (UPASI) and the Tea Board of India will be jointly organising its fourth edition in Dubai, next month.

Mr N. Dharmaraj, Convenor, Organising Committee of TGLIA: STC, said that ever since the introduction of the competition good quality south Indian tea could penetrate into new markets apart from achieving additional value realisation.

“There has been an increase in quality of tea exported to the US. Quality south Indian teas could also find its way into Iran, which is a quality conscious market for orthodox tea. Besides, price advantage is also there,” he said. Exports to the UAE market also have shown a significant increase and that could be attributed to the TGLIA: STC edition held there once earlier, Mr Dharmaraj pointed out. “We are convinced of the necessity to continue the competition as a process and to sustain the quality renaissance of the south Indian tea industry.” The final level of screening would be organised on February 18, at Hyatt Regency, Dubai, coinciding with the 2nd Global Dubai Tea Forum 2008, being organised by Dubai Tea Trading Centre (DTTC) from February 19.

The first level of screening will be organised at Coonoor on February 2, by a panel of national experts, which will be followed by technical analysis for European Union (EU) standards for pesticide residues and heavy metals, as well as compliance to ISO 3720.

The TGLIA, Mr Dharmaraj said, has now been acknowledged as the torch bearer for the south Indian tea quality improvement. The winner logos issued by the TGLIA is now being used by many producers.

The competition and the teas thus showcased in many international fairs has slowly but surely been removing the stigma attached to south Indian teas as inferior in quality by exposing their inherent quality capabilities. He said such a perception change is an integral part of the south Indian tea industry’s sustainable economic development model. He said that it was heartening to note that some of the leading packers in the world are beginning to evaluate their tea purchases objectively, not biased by ‘origin’ but more on the basis intrinsic ‘value for money platform”

The format and protocol especially the quality assessment methodology (copyrighted) has been applauded across the globe, he said, adding that the Tea Board has shown keenness to extend this exercise to North India as well.

The fourth edition of TGLIA 2008, he said, is part of UPASI and Tea Board’s long term plan for using the TGLIA platform to seek quality and value enhancement for South Indian teas, through the competition route and it’s connected marketing initiatives.
