P.S. Sundar

Coonoor, Jan. 7

Global tea production increased in 2007 aided principally by Kenya. According to the latest information available with the Tea Board, the output rose by 46.88 million kg (mkg) in the 10 months of 2007 over the corresponding period of last year.

The production rose to 1552.13 mkg from 1505.25 mkg.

Kenya factor

The biggest increase of 64 mkg has occurred in Kenya. Following prolonged drought, the country had lost 18 mkg in 2006 to produce 310.8 mkg. But, with the weather improving, production showed remarkable recovery in 2007. By now, the production rose to 340 mkg.

Indonesia produced 8.99 mkg more to reach 68.42 mkg. Bangladesh reported 5.15 mkg increase to reach 47.3 mkg. Malawi’s production increased by 2.75 mkg to soar to 39.7 mkg.
