Kolkata, Jan. 7

The State Government has proposed to take over 27 coal mines that have been abandoned by Eastern Coalfields Ltd (ECL) and operate them on a public-private partnership (PPP) basis.

Speaking to newspersons at Writers’ Buildings here, the West Bengal Chief Secretary, Mr Amit Kiran Deb, said the Union Government had recently formed a task force to suggest ways to tackle the issue of illegal mining, which has emerged as a major problem in some districts.

In West Bengal, around 50,000 people in Purulia, Bardhaman and Bankura districts are currently engaged in illegal mining that was “dangerous and unscientific”, he said.
