People Vinod Rai assumes charge as CAG Our Bureau New Delhi, Jan. 7 Mr Vinod Rai, a 1972 batch IAS officer of Kerala Cadre, on Monday assumed charge as the Comptroller and Auditor-General of India (CAG). He was administered the oath of office by the President, Ms Pratibha Patil, at a brief function at Rashtrapathi Bhawan. The Vice-President, Mr Hamid Ansari; the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh; and the Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram were among the dignitaries present at the function. Mr Rai, who is now the 11th CAG, has been appointed for a term of six years or till he attains the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier. He will turn sixty on May 23 this year. While declining to go into his priorities at the new assignment, Mr Rai told reporters that he was accepting this job “with deep humility”. Stating that it was an important assignment, Mr Rai said that he was looking forward to the job. Prior to his appointment as CAG, Mr Rai was Financial Services Secretary in the Ministry of Finance. Mr Rai holds Masters Degree in Economics from the University of Delhi and Masters in Public Administration from Harvard University. He has replaced Mr V.N.Kaul, who has, after completing his term as CAG, moved to the UN’s Independent Audit Advisory Committee.
