Mr Rajiv Bajaj Our Bureau New Delhi, Jan. 8 The light commercial vehicle segment that is already witnessing entry of a series of new players will also have Bajaj Auto competing in the same space by 2009. Bajaj Auto on Tuesday launched its LCV that will have a 3.5 tonne capacity, which would be manufactured from its Chakan facility, near Pune. “We will roll out our LCV with a 3.5 tonne capacity and equipped with multi-cylinder engines by 2009 from our Chakan facility,” said Mr R.C. Maheshwari, CEO - Commercial Vehicle Business, Bajaj Auto. No details“Bajaj would, however, not showcase it at the Auto Expo,” said Mr Rajiv Bajaj, Managing Director, BAL. Mr Bajaj also said that it would be launching the commercial vehicle on its “Lite” platform, which will be common to both, cargo vehicle and small car. He also said that the LCV would be on a diesel engine, developed indigenously by the company. The company declined to comment on any specific details with regard to investments, but said that the plant is expected to have a capacity of 2,50,000 units for both LCVs and the car. The LCVs price would be announced closer to its official launch. The light commercial vehicle segment has been witnessing growth after the launch of Tata’s Ace in the sub three-tonne category. In the last few months, Ashok Leyland entered in to a joint venture with Nissan, Swedish automotive giant Volvo tied up with Eicher and Daimler with the Hero Group, each competing for a pie of the LCVs segment.
