Air India offloads 60 passengers due to overbooking

Mumbai, Jan. 8

Around 60 passengers of Air India flight AI 125 Mumbai-London-Chicago were offloaded from the aircraft on Tuesday.

According to a statement issued by the national carrier, the spokesperson said, “Air India would like to state that over booking of flights is an industry-wide practice. This is done primarily to ensure that the seats, which are a perishable commodity, do not go vacant if confirmed passengers do not turn up for the flights. There are occasions where all confirmed passengers turn up leading to a situation when passengers have to be offloaded.”

However, the airline said that like other airlines, it has made necessary arrangements for the passengers at various hotels and that they would be flying to Chicago by an early morning flight on Wednesday. It has also made arrangements for telephone facility to enable its passengers to inform their near and dear ones regarding the change in travel plan, said the spokesperson.
