Our Bureau

Thanjavur, Jan. 9 The Food Minister, Mr A.V. Velu, has expressed the hope that the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation will procure 16.5 lakh tonnes of samba paddy from the Cauvery delta districts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam this year.

He told presspersons that so far the 508 direct procurement centres (DPCs) in the three districts have procured 7,300 tonnes of samba paddy till Wednesday.

Procurement is expected to pick up by Pongal. Once it picks up, the corporation would open more number of DPCs in the three districts.

“We are planning to open up to 1,200 DPCs in the three districts to cope up with peak time arrivals,” the Minister said.

He said that with respect to moisture content, the State Government has written to the Union Government to hike the ceiling for moisture content.

At present paddy with moisture content up to 17 per cent is purchased.

The Minister said that there are 1.96 crore ration cardholders in Tamil Nadu who get rice at Rs two a kg. Supply will continue at any cost.

He clarified that there will be a decline in rice stock in the central pool during December every year.

But it will pick up with harvest picking up in many states like Chhattisgarh, Punjab etc. Hence, Tamil Nadu will get its quota without any problem from the Central Government.
