Hyderabad, Jan. 9

Singapore Tourism Board (STB) has set its sight on an ambitious target of attracting one million Indian tourists annually in the near future.

At present, India constitutes just over 7 per cent of its total tourists, which just crossed 10 million during 2007. “We hope to grow at 15-20 per cent in the next few years,” said Ms Siew-Kheng Kang, Regional Director-South Asia, Middle East & Africa of the STB.

In Hyderabad to present the historic 10 millionth visitor Mr Sanjeev Bhandari and family to newspersons and focus on new initiatives, Ms Siew-Kheng said the STB plans to work with travel agents and other tourist bodies to draw more Indians to the country.

Incentive visitors, especially from corporates (where companies want to award employees with high performance, foreign trips), students, film production houses, business travellers and families will get attractive packages, she told newspersons. The Singapore Airline is joining hands with plans to increase the number of flights and destinations which stand at 55 per week and eight cities.

The island-country is adding new attractions such as the Singapore Flyer, giant observation wheel, formula-1 race and two integrated resorts. Hyderabad is the fifth largest market within India for the Singapore tourism industry.

Mr Bhandari, who works with a multinational here explained the experience he and family had as the lucky ten millionth visitor.

India is the fourth largest inbound market for visitor arrivals to Singapore. From January-November 2007, a total of nearly 7 lakh Indians visited the country, which is a 13.7 per cent growth over the same period the previous year, said Mr Kiran Bhandari, Area Director of STB (South India, Sri Lanka and Maldives).
