AP Govt asks US to invest in hospital infrastructure

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Jan. 9

The State Government has asked the US to invest in building hospital infrastructure in the State.

The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, made this request to Mr Michael O. Leavitt, Secretary, US Department of Health and Human Services, and Mr Andrew von Eschenbach, Commissioner US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA), after a presentation on ‘Arogya Sri’ scheme of the Government here on Tuesday.

Besides investment, the US could also advice and help the State Government in providing quality healthcare to the poor, the Chief Minister said.

By September, ‘Arogya Sri’ would cover the entire below poverty line population (about 82 per cent of population) in the State, he informed the US officials.

Appreciating the healthcare initiatives taken by the Government, Mr Leavitt said though the US had a similar scheme to ‘Arogya Sri’ to provide health insurance to children, it was not comparable to what was being done in the State in the vast cover and number of beneficiaries.

Mr Eschenbach said in the US too, there were few health insurance schemes but there was a contribution or payment of premium by the beneficiaries. The scheme was impressive and could be replicated by others, he added.

The State Government had launched ‘Arogya Sri’ 282 days ago, and currently has 112 network hospitals. It had so far conducted 1,147 health schemes and screened 2.97 lakh patients and performed 10,923 surgeries, according to a release.
