Our Bureau
New Delhi, Jan. 9 The Annual Plan size of Kerala for 2008-2009 has been pegged at Rs 7,700 crore, inclusive of additional Central Assistance of Rs 100 crore for projects of special importance to the State.
This was finalised here on Wednesday at a meeting between the Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission, Mr Montek Singh Ahluwalia, and the Chief Minister, Mr V.S. Achutanandan.
In his initial remarks, Mr Ahluwalia said that the Commission was keen on improving utilisation of funds under Centrally sponsored schemes and would like to work in coordination with the State Government for removing rigidity in the guidelines for these schemes.
He said the Planning Commission was in support of maximising flexibility and would welcome suggestions from States. For effective deployment of resources, States need more flexibility, he added.
Mr Ahluwalia said the State Government should work for providing better infrastructure for higher education, skill development and tourism. He appreciated the State Government’s efforts in maintaining fiscal discipline while improving Plan performance. The Planning Commission complimented the State for continued emphasis on social sector development. Achievements in universalising elementary education, life expectancy and male to female ratio were appreciated.
Innovative schemes in health and education sectors like revision of text books, diversification of secondary education and free health care to the bottom 30 per cent of the population were in line with the national priorities.
