Volkswagen to launch two sedans this year

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Jan. 9

European car maker Volkswagen on Wednesday showcased sedan Jetta at the Auto Expo. Priced at around Rs 14 lakh, it is slated to be rolled out by June in two versions — a 1.6-petrol engine and a 1.9-diesel engine.

The company is also looking at introducing its luxury sedan Pheoton, and SUV Tiguan, during the year. These would be available as completely built units.

The company also showcased its concept car UP! at the expo, which it is considering for a launch in the Indian market. However, Volkswagen refrained from giving specific price points for the Indian roads for its cars.

“Considering the potential of the small car here, we feel that UP! is ideal for the domestic market,” said Mr Joerg Mueller, President, Volkswagen India Pvt. Ltd.

Commenting on the small car that the company intended to launch by 2010, Mr Mueller said that it would be on the Polo platform. While he declined to divulge engine specifics, he said that it would be available in both petrol and diesel versions.

Currently, Volkswagen is manufacturing Passat from its group company, Skoda’s facility in Aurangabad and plans to roll out Jetta from the same plant. The company said that its Chakan plant, with an annual capacity of around 1,10,000 units, would be primarily for its small car.

With regard to the expansion of its dealer network, Mr Mueller said that the company would take it up to 10 exclusive dealers from the current three. He said the company was also open to sharing the 50-strong dealership network of Skoda. However, its showrooms would be separate for Skoda and Volkswagen products.

The company is also looking to grab a 10 per cent of the domestic market share over the next three to four years.
