Letters Inclusive innovation, exclusive problems This is with reference to your editorial “Inclusive Innovation” (Business Line, January 11). Of course, the launch of the Nano car fulfils the middle-class families’ aspiration of owning a car. This new innovation with ‘frugal engineering’ will cover a large segment of the population on affordability parameter. Yet one must agree that the environmentalists’ warning of unsustainable emission of roads by this new car is justified and there is an urgent need to improve the road infrastructure. Buyers of two-wheelers will switch over to this fancy new four-wheeler and create additional need for petroleum products, the prices of which are already soaring. Bankers and hire-purchase agents will get doubly busy offering loans in large numbers to enable people to buy this car and they might well have to deal with the subsequent problem of default in repayment. Above all, the problem of parking this vehicle on road-sides will be the main worry for the traffic controlling authority. Since other leading car-makers are also jumping on the band-wagon of producing small cars at affordable prices, the government must first iron out the attendant problems. N. R.
