Farmers obstruct KSEZ officials

Our Bureau

Kakinada, Jan. 11

Farmers of Sriramapuram village in Kakinada rural mandal on Friday obstructed the officials of the Kakinada Special Economic Zone (KSEZ) officials, when the latter went to the village to demarcate its boundaries.

Some anti-SEZ activists and villagers protested and told the officials that there was a High Court stay on the project and therefore they should not proceed with the demarcation work. However, when the officials did not heed to their warnings, the farmers obstructed them.

The police intervened and persuaded the farmers that they should represent their grievances to the revenue officials. The officials then proceeded with their work and the farmers left the place to submit a memorandum to the mandal revenue officer. Farmers of the Kakinada rural mandal have been demanding the Government not to acquire their lands, under the Pithapuram branch canal (Godavari canal), for the SEZ.
