Eyes at least Rs 5 crore from the LED range

Chennai, Jan. 11 Bajaj Electricals, part of the Rs 20,000-crore Bajaj group, has unveiled a range of LED (light emitting diode) lighting solutions, branded ‘Green’. The Chennai launch will be followed by national roll-out soon.

According to Mr V.R. Majumdar, Executive Vice-President (Luminaires), Bajaj Electricals Ltd, Green is the latest in the lighting portfolio of the company.

He said LED products are suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications. Targeting IT, ITES and BPO services and retail showrooms, the company expects at least Rs 5 crore from the LED range in the first year.

Energy Intensive

Contrary to the popular belief that LED lightings are the most energy-efficient, at the present level of technology, they are actually slightly more energy intensive than normal tube lights.

When tube light’s energy efficacy is 75 lumens per watt that of LED is just 55-60 lumens per watt. Lumen is a unit of measurement of light. A ‘foot-candle’ is how bright the light is one foot away from a birthday candle and a lumen is equal to one foot-candle falling on one square foot of area.

However, according to Mr Majumdar, LED may soon achieve 90-100 lumens per watt as the technology improves.

Being present in verticals such as home appliances, fans, lighting, luminaires and engineering and projects, Bajaj Electricals posted a turnover of over Rs 1,100 crore last year and aims to cross the Rs 2,000-crore mark in the next two to three years.

Its products are available across the country in over 1.2-lakh retail outlets. It has a distribution network of 600 distributors and 3,000 dealers.
