Radio/TV Variety - Sports Sony Max, World Sport bag 10-year IPL media rights for $1 b “We are not interested in the next ICC event because it is becoming a little expensive. -- Kunal Dasgupta
Our Bureau Mumbai, Jan. 14 Sports broadcasters Sony Max together with World Sport will pay $1.026 billion for the 10-year global media and production rights for the BCCI’s 20:20 cricket, Indian Premier League. “We officially broadcasted the ICC events for seven years, from 2000 to 2007. We are not interested in the next ICC events because it is becoming a little expensive. “We decided to go for the shorter version of 20:20 matches,” said Mr Kunal Dasgupta, Chief Executive Officer, Sony Entertainment Television India. A total of 59 matches will be played over 44 days in 11 cities. An advertising slot of 50 seconds is available between the fall of a wicket and the resumption of batting by the next batsman, besides the time taken in between overs. Rough estimates put the total advertising time at around 60 minutes per match lasting three-and-a-half hours of cricket. Thus, the 59-match tournament is likely to generate roughly around 60 hours of advertising space to Sony. Franchisee bids for the 32 interested parties will open on January 24, when eight franchisees would be selected to own teams at a base price of $50 million for each team. IPL has roped in 80 international players from across the world, who will be selected by various team owners through an auction on February 7, to be telecast live on SETMax. The others who took the tender documents for hosting IPL were ESPN Star Sports, Star Sports, Ten Sports, Nimbus, Providence Equity and Network Solutions Pvt Ltd (NDTV). Good response to IPL’s global media rights tender More Stories on : Radio/TV | Sports
