Finance Ministry gets new advisor

New Delhi, Jan. 16 Ahead of budget 2008-09 slated for end-February, Dr Shubhashis Gangopadhyay has been appointed as advisor to the Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram.

Dr Gangopadhyay has been appointed to this post in the place of Dr Parthasarathi Shome, who had recently submitted his resignation and demitted office on January 11.

A PhD in Economics from Cornell University, US, Dr Gangopadhyay assumed charge as advisor to the Finance Minister on Tuesday. His appointment, which has been approved by the Appointment Committee of Cabinet, will be in the rank and pay of the Secretary to the Government of India, an official release said.

Prior to this appointment, Dr Gangopadhyay was director at India Development Foundation, an independent research organisation. He was earlier a professor at the Indian Statistical Institute and has a distinguished teaching career including at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden; Rutgers University, US and University of Southern California, US.
