1,000 trained rural graduates to soon join BPO companies

G. Naga Sridhar

Hyderabad, Jan 16 About 1,000 rural graduates from Andhra Pradesh will soon join different Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) companies in their offices to be located in tier-II and semi-urban areas. The Employment Generation and Marketing Mission (EGMM) of the Government of Andhra Pradesh has almost finalised the deal with “some large BPO companies” in this regard and the placement process would commence from March, Ms Meera Shenoy, Executive Director, EGMM, told Business Line here.

Commitments

“One of the companies has already committed to hire 100 graduates trained by us information technology (IT) to work in a BPO facility to be set up in Chittoor,” she said while declining to name the firms. “The top officials of the companies involved are expected to make formal announcements in due course,” she added.

In what can be described as a new trend, top BPO companies are approaching EGMM for providing trained people even in urban areas. “Till recently, our major focus has been on improving employability of rural graduates to man IT-based jobs in tier-II and semi-urban areas. But now, we have been approached by some to provide manpower to work in urban areas as well,” she said.

Exclusive training

Buoyed by the response, EGMM is now planning to take up exclusive intensive training in IT-related jobs to rural graduates soon. Currently, the agency, an arm of the State Department of Rural Development is providing common training for those who pass X, XII and graduation in the areas of Computer basics and back-end BPO work, rural retailing, English and construction trades. “We want to segregate graduates from others to be trained exclusively in BPO-related skills in view of the growing demand,” Ms Shenoy said.

Aiming big

Last year (till December 31, 2007), EGMM trained over 80,000 people in its 191 training centres located across the State. Currently, over 12,000 graduates are undergoing training the duration of which may vary from two to three months depending on a candidate’s ability to learn, she added. In the current year, EGMM is targeting increase the placement ratio significantly. “In IT alone, we are aiming big. These one thousand jobs to be provided should be seen as only a beginning. We are eyeing big numbers by this year-end,” she added.
