The Hindu Business Line : Concor to operate services from Bangalore to Kochi

Kochi, Jan. 17 Container Corporation of India has decided to run two scheduled container train services from its ICD at Whitefield (Bangalore) to the Rajiv Gandhi Container Terminal of the Kochi Port every week to cater to the growing demand of the shipping lines to route their containers originating from ICD Whitefield through Kochi Port.

Connections

The services are scheduled to ensure back-to-back connections with the mainline vessels to the US/West Asia and the feeder connections to Colombo and Jebel Ali, said Mr Suresh Joseph, General Manager, DP World, Kochi.

The delays being faced in the current routing via other South India ports resulting in longer transit times and the inability of the shipping lines to commit a service guarantee has resulted in the shipping lines looking at an alternative gateway to route their containers, he said.

Coastal vessels

The increase in coastal vessels connecting Kochi to Nava Sheva, Pipavav and Mundra had enabled shipping lines to bring in their empty containers from the North to Kochi en-route to Bangalore for export shipments.

Shipping lines had also started routing their imports from China to Bangalore through Kochi Port due to faster, guaranteed transit times.
