Cummins to make India global hub for small gensets

Our Bureau

Pune, Jan 17 The power generation business unit of Cummins India Ltd (CIL) has commissioned a new plant at Pirangut for the manufacture of generator sets from 7.5-140 kVA for both the domestic and overseas markets. The facility will also be global manufacturing hub for a newly developed line of generator sets from 7.5 kVA to 45 kVA that will be manufactured only in India.

Built with an investment of Rs 20 crore, the Pirangut facility has a dedicated export- oriented unit and domestic tariff area with a combined installed capacity to produce 50,000 open and closed generator sets, per annum. Manufacture of the 30-38 kVA range has commenced here, and the entire range will be introduced over the next seven to nine months, Mr Anant Talaulicar, Chairman and Managing Director, CIL, said.

Pointing out that the telecom industry was one of the major growth drivers for generator sets below 15 kVA, he disclosed that the products which have more than 95 per cent localisation would be exported to West Asia, China, Latin America, Africa and countries in Eastern Europe.

Mr Tony Satterthwaite, Vice-President, Worldwide Genset Business, said the company was growing rapidly in the smaller range and the new product range matched up to global standards and would help Cummins penetrate the market dominated by the Caterpillar group.

Adding that small gensets were also being manufactured in the UK and the US, he said, “We will be consolidating the business, and much of the UK volume will (in time) come here.”

The commissioning of the new facility has enhanced the capacity of Cummins Power Generation India to 70,000 units per annum.
