Overseas Investments Taj hotels launching property in Bhutan Shubhra Tandon Mumbai Jan. 17 The Taj group of hotels would be launching a new property under its leisure portfolio in Thimpu, Bhutan on January 23. Taj Tashi, as it will be known, would be under a management contract between the Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces and a Bhutanese business house-Tashi Group of Companies. Tashi Group is also the owner of Druk Group of Hotels and retail agents and distributors of various multinationals and Indian companies including Bharat Petroleum. Speaking to Business Line, Ms Jyoti Narang, Chief Operating Officer, Leisure Hotels, Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces said, “Bhutan is strategic to Taj’s plans as we don’t have a presence in any hill station in the North of India and we wanted to go to a place where no hotel company has gone.” Foreseeing Bhutan as the “next destination” for conferencing, Ms Narang said, “During winters well-known locales like Goa, Rajasthan or Kerala become expensive for conferencing, Bhutan in a relative sense (maybe not air fares) would give you a fairly good quality experience in an exotic location.” The hotel would offer 66 rooms and suites with the tariff starting from $300.
