Effluent irrigation

Mohan Padmanabhan

Kolkata, Jan. 17

The effluent discharged by the 250-tpd (tonne per day) Coimbatore paper unit is utilised for irrigating about 75 hectares of land within the factory premises.

According to Mr C.V.Nair, the unit head, periodic monitoring of the changes in soil and groundwater quality parameters under continuous treated effluent irrigation was being carried out through a collaborative venture with the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University.

The TNAU’s Department of Environmental Sciences, while suggesting continuous monitoring to assess the long term effect of treated paperboard effluent irrigation, has, in an interim report, stated that it can be used for irrigation, as the vital parameters were well within the limits prescribed by the State PCB norms.

The soil and groundwater samples were collected at benchmark sites in the factory premises and surrounding areas. Mr Nair said one of the objectives was vermin composting of solid waste and studying the impact of effluent irrigation on flower crop.
