TRAI distances itself from DoT’s decision
Our Bureau
New Delhi, Jan. 17The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has shot off yet another letter to the Government saying that the decision to give Letters of Intent to new players was not totally in line with the recommendations of the regulator. TRAI said that while it had not suggested any cap on the number of operators, it had suggested that the Government must make sure that there is enough spectrum before allowing new players in. What has irked the telecom regulator is the Department of Telecom (DoT) trying to justify its decisions on grounds that they were based on TRAI recommendations.
“The authority reiterates that its recommendations on the entry of new service providers have always been linked to the availability of spectrum,” the TRAI letter sent on January 14 said. This is the second letter which TRAI has written to DoT over the past two days questioning recent policy decisions.
TRAI referred to its earlier communication to DoT wherein it had said that the Government could not pick and choose from the recommendations as all the issues were interlinked. It said that DoT should have consulted the regulator if there was any deviation from the totality of the recommendations.
