Tourism States - Kerala Tourism dept to focus on north Kerala Our Bureau Thiruvananthapuram, Jan. 17 Kerala Tourism will take steps to develop several locations in north Kerala as major tourist destinations. Addressing a press conference in the city today, the State Tourism Minister, Mr Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, said that Bekal in Kasaragod district and Muzhappilangadi drive-in-beach and Dharmadam in Kannur district would be developed as major tourist destinations. Similarly, efforts will be taken to develop Wayanad district as an important tourist destination. The district is already attracting a number of visitors, especially from Karnataka, but the tourism infrastructure in Wayanad needs to be improved, he added. The State Government will look at introducing schemes to encourage people living in Kerala to visit tourist destinations in the State, Mr Balakrishnan said. A consultant has been identified to develop a master plan for Munnar, he added. Hotel projectsOngoing hotel projects in Kerala are expected to add between 2,500 and 3,000 hotel rooms to the State’s inventory, said Dr V. Venu, Secretary-Tourism, Government of Kerala. Twenty-five hotels with facilities that will meet, at the very least, the four-star classification standards are currently under construction in Kerala, he added. Kerala Tourism has also announced that the annual Nishagandhi Dance Festival will begin in Thiruvananthapuram on January 20. The week-long event will include performances by dancers from across the country. The State Governor, Mr R.L. Bhatia, will inaugurate the event, to be held at the Nishagandhi open-air auditorium in the city. More Stories on : Tourism | Kerala
