Logistics - Railways
Transporting bulk commodities

It is learnt that RITES Ltd is working on a project, which if takes a concrete shape, will function like an ICD/CFS for bulk commodities. Right now the Railways faces a lot of problems in transporting bulk items like iron ore and coal to its small customers, i.e. customers who require less than rake-loads — may be five to six wagons or even less. In a rake comprising 58 wagons, piecemeal traffic of five or six creates detention of wagons and various operational and other problems. Most small customers do not have their own sidings. It is not always possible for them to have their own sidings either. Under the proposed project, which will be known as a sort of logistics park, the consignments of a few smaller customers of bulk items will be aggregated to form a full rake and transported to the park to be completed with sidings and other facilities and customers will take delivery of their cargoes from there.
