Logistics - Railways
Eurasian land-bridge

The concept of Eurasian Land-Bridge, also known as the New Silk Road, received a big boost recently when a freight train loaded with containers left Beijing for Hamburg on a 10,000-km long journey. The route is through China, Mongolia, along the Trans-Siberia Rail route and then through Belarus and Poland finally reaching Hamburg and in all six national Railways are involved. The total journey time is estimated at 20 days. The aim, it is learnt, is to achieve 15 to 18 days in future, which will be twice as fast as ocean-going vessel. At the same time, the rail transportation will be cheaper than airfreight for various types of cargoes. The six Railway companies are keen on competitive offerings to gain market share from ocean and airfreight. However, details such as vehicle technology and accelerating customs formalities are still to be sorted out.
