Railways Industry & Economy - Exports & Imports Wagon shortage slows exports
An estimated 1.5 lakh tonnes of goods are awaiting shipment at various ports.
Shortage of Railway wagons and berthing delays at the ports are believed to have slowed down exports of soyameal. Reports have it that an estimated 1.5 lakh tonnes of exports are lying at various ports awaiting shipments and another 1.5 lakh tonnes at the factories awaiting allotment of rakes by the Rrailways. The delays at Visakhapatnam, JNPT and Kandla, the three ports handling the bulk of shipments, are long because of the long pre-berthing detention of ships. Also, the demand for rail freight wagons during this time of every year jumps, causing enormous problems for the Railways as also the customers. A judicious allotment of rakes becomes a difficult proposition. During the year ended September 2007, soyameal exports were 3.4 mt. The projection is that the exports will exceed four mt in the current year that began in October 2007. OUR BUREAU More Stories on : Railways | Exports & Imports | Oilseeds & Edible Oil
