AEPC to set up knitwear technology mission

Sakthivel to head panel that is to be headquartered in Tirupur

G. Gurumurthy

Coimbatore, Jan 20 A knitwear technology mission, with emphasis on developing new genre fabrics, engaging newer technology in manufacture and increasing the designing capability of knitwear sector aimed at higher value-addition, is to be established soon by the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC).

Disclosing this at an exporters’ meet, held under the aegis of the Tirupur Exporters Association (TEA) at the knitwear town on Saturday, the AEPC Chairman, Mr Rakesh Vaid, said the proposed mission would have its headquarters in Tirupur, according to a communication from the TEA.

Branding

Mr A. Sakthivel, President of the TEA and past Chairman of AEPC, will head the new mission, Mr Vaid added.

Considering the Tirupur knitwear exporting cluster’s standing in the global map as a largest knitwear supplier from India, Mr Vaid has come forward to promote “Made in Tirupur (India)” as a trade mark in the global market.

He said AEPC would extend its support to the mission. Mr Vaid also assured to upgrade the existing Apparel Training and Design Centre and introduce short-term technical courses in designing and merchandising.

TheAEPC will be renamed as Apparel Trade Promotion Council to promote both export and domestic markets in view of the fact that the dismantling of the quota regime under the WTO has turned textile trade a seamless one.

Market promotion

On the market promotion activity of AEPC, it was pointed out that the Council has already established an apparel mart consisting of 250 show rooms in the Apparel House in Gurgaon near Delhi.

Mr Vaid felt a similar mart could be set up at Tirupur after identifying suitable land mainly to promote domestic and international trade in knitwear.

According to him, India’s textile and clothing trade will reach the $160-billion mark by 2015 with the share of clothing at $60 billion.
