Research on basic science vital: Kalam

Our Correspondent

Madurai, Jan 21 Research in basic science is vital for development. Indian organisations and industries will need to promote this for acquiring technological innovations and the strength to face global competitiveness.

The country needs to develop its indigenous technologies to move forward, said the former President, Mr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, here. He said the present economic growth has been facilitated by the use of technologies developed elsewhere, generated by a decade and more before.

These may not anymore become available for countries such as India with patent regimes in force, he observed.

Mr Kalam mentioned seven areas for research to pursue — energy sector, nuclear power generation using thorium, research for prevention of HIV/AIDS, stem cell etc, research for forecasting the earthquake and technology for precise forecasting of rain content for particular cloud conditions, in his address after inaugurating the Centre for Advanced Research in Evolutionary Computing at Thiagarajar College of Engineering, at Tirupparankundram, near here.
