Reliance SEZ proposal among a dozen cleared

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Jan. 21 The Board of Approval for Special Economic Zones (SEZ) today gave its nod for a dozen proposals including one in-principle approval for a multi-product SEZ by Reliance in Jhaijar district, Haryana.

The BoA, which was to meet on January 18, met here on Monday under the Chairmanship of the Commerce Secretary, Mr Gopal K. Pillai. He informed the board that so far 428 SEZs have been granted formal approvals out of which 194 have been notified as on date. A sum of Rs 52,193 crore had been invested in these notified units.

Other proposals

Even as the meeting took up for consideration 19 proposals for setting up SEZs including two for conversion of in-principle ones to formal nod, it cleared eleven formal approvals that include three IT/ITeS SEZs in Maharashtra, another such SEZs in Uttar Pradesh, Biotechnology SEZ by Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Ltd in Maharashtra and two gem and jewellery SEZs — one in Dadra Nagar Haveli and another in Haryana.

The board also approved conversion of in–principle approval to formal approvals for two SEZs — one Free Trade Warehousing Zone by Haldia Free Trade Warehousing Pvt Ltd and another textile sector SEZs by RNB Infrastructure in Bikaner, Rajasthan.

Later Mr Pilai told reporters that the Commerce Ministry has sought the Law Ministry’s view on the recent move by the Goa government to scrap even notified SEZs. He further said since the three SEZs in Goa, including the pharmaceutical zone of Cipla were cleared by the BoA, the issue would need to be deliberated by the Board at its next month meeting.
