Events States - Andhra Pradesh AP tech sector has taken big strides in last 3 years: CM
Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy Our Bureau Hyderabad, Jan. 21 The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, and former chief minister, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, are engaged in a debate, with the latter claiming that he had played a major role in growth of the technology sector in the State. This has lead Dr Reddy to refute the claims of the TDP leader that he was mainly responsible for IT promotion in the State. Quoting numbers, Dr Reddy said that the IT sector has grown by leaps and bounds in the last three-and-a-half years. The State IT exports that contributed 8.62 per cent during 2003-04 had increased to 14 per cent in 2006-07. Reddy Vs NaiduDr Reddy said that while the total IT employment created in seven years during 1997-2004 was 85,945, in just three years from 2004-05 to 2006-07, additional employment of 1,01,505 was created. These numbers reflect the strides made during the last three years. The Chief Minister, in a statement, said Mr Naidu is spreading a canard that during his regime IT sector in Andhra Pradesh made a big thrust. In fact, it was during the TDP regime, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka overtook Andhra Pradesh in both IT growth and exports. The Chief Minister said that the State continued to maintain high growth rate in the IT sector in the last three-and-a-half years. During 2004-05, the State growth rate was 64.5 per cent, as against the national average of 34 per cent with exports at Rs 8,270 crore. During 2005-06, the growth rate stood at 51 per cent against a national average of 36 per cent, with exports of Rs 18,582 crore. IT contributes 52.09 per cent of the total exports from the State.
