Market break; investors left in lurch




Bolting the door: Dalal Street on Tuesday pulled down its shutters for an hour after an early morning crash as part of the regulator's effort to safeguard investors' interest from any sudden surge or fall in the market levels. This is the fourth time in the history of the Indian exchanges. The last time the market witnessed a similar break in trading on October 17, when the SEBI issued guidelines tightening P-Note norms. Before that, on May 22, 2006 (due to weak global cues) and on May 17, 2004 (unexpected defeat of the NDA government in Parliamentary elections) trading was suspended. But on all the previous occasions, the benchmark indices recovered sharply on the back of resilient Indian economy.
