Jet plans MRO, flight catering institute

Ashwini Phadnis

New Delhi, Jan. 22

Jet Airways is to set up a Maintenance Repair and Overhaul facility and a flight catering facility as part of the airline’s diversification plans, the airline Executive Vice-President, Mr Sudheer Raghavan, has said.

“At the moment, the airline is evaluating a suitable site for the MRO facility. No decision has yet been taken on who we should partner with for the facility. Our first choice would be to look at home grown talent for the facility.

Growing demand

“A group has been constituted within the company to take the project forward and we expect to have the facility running by early 2010. Setting up a flight catering facility makes sense as there is huge demand and there is also good potential in the MRO business,” Mr Raghavan told Business Line.

Chennai, Hyderabad and Nagpur are among the various locations that have been considered for the MRO facility. The decision to expand into the MRO business has been taken as the airline is to acquire more aircraft.

“The MRO can be kept busy just looking after the aircraft in the fleet. If there is any spare capacity at the MRO then it could be used to look after aircraft of other airlines also,” Mr Raghavan added.

More aircraft orders

The airline, which at the moment has a fleet of 76 aircraft with a majority being from the US-based Boeing company, has also ordered more aircraft from both the European consortium Airbus and Boeing. The MRO and flight catering institute along with the proposal to diversify into the hospitality industry would help in cutting costs, airline officials said.
