8 more apparel training centres planned in TN

G. Gurumurthy

Coimbatore, Jan. 22 The Apparel Training and Design Centre (ATDC), a body sponsored by the Apparel Export Promotion Council to step up job-oriented vocational training for the garment industry, has chalked out plans to start eight more training centres in Tamil Nadu including one in Puducherry.

Proposals submitted

The new centres for which the ATDC has already submitted proposals to respective district administration in Tamil Nadu are Kanchipuram, Dindigul, Tirunelveli, Myladudurai, and one in Puducherry.

In the case of two other centres proposed to be set up in Erode and Coimbatore, the respective district administration has given its approval for the same and action towards setting up these centres is on, according to Mr C. S. Sridhar, administrative office of ATDC, Tirupur.

The ATDC has already established five such centres in Tamil Nadu that currently function in Guindy (Chennai), Avanashi (Tirupur), Mogappair (Chennai), Dharmapuri and Perambalur. Of these, the first three centres were set up by the ATDC’s own funds and the Dharmapuri and Perambalur centres were sponsored by the respective district administrations as part of the job-oriented vocational training programme of the district rural development agency.

According to the ATDC official, the Centre has chosen in the phase one to target those districts where employment opportunities are presently minimal. Each centre is capable of training about 1,000 students.

The district administration, in each case, would provide the needed infrastructure such as land, building and machinery required for the training, estimated at Rs 30 lakh.

The ATDC would also meet the recurring expenditure for each of these training centres.

Training programmes

The short-and long-term training programmes offered at these centres included diploma in garment manufacturing, production supervision, pattern making and cutting, sewing machine operation and machine mechanic, etc. The training courses would meet the requirement of both the woven and knitted garment sectors.

The sixth centre of ATDC being set up at Paramakudi in the backward Ramanathapuram district is set to start working in March this year. The district administration has also provided 5,000 sq. ft. work area for the Paramakudi centre coming up at Emaneshwaram weaver’s park project there.
