Workshop on cluster development

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Jan 23. The National Resource Centre for Cluster Development (NRCD) is organising a 2-day national workshop on micro, small & medium enterprises (MSME) cluster development in New Delhi, during January 28-29, 2008.

The workshop aims to bring together organisations/institutions from across the country, concerned with the implementation of cluster methodology, to share the experiences, synergise the efforts, come up with strategies to overcome the limitations and add to the momentum of the initiatives.

Organised by the Hyderabad-based, National Institute for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (NI-MSME), the outcome of the workshop is expected to facilitate the Union Ministries and the State Governments to chalk out measures for more effective implementation of cluster development approach in the country.

The Union Minister of MSME, Mr Mahabir Prasad, would inaugurate the workshop while the Minister of Labour& Employment, Mr Oscar Fernandez, will be the Chief Guest for the valedictory function, according to a press release from NI-MSME.

India has the largest number (6,400), and a wide variety of clusters. With a turnover approximating Rs 6,00,000 crore, they are providing employment to an estimated 7.5 million persons, and account for 60 per cent of total manufacturing exports.

Over the last decade, the UNIDO has supported 24 schemes in the country supporting various forms of cluster development initiatives. Three Union Ministries – Textiles, MSME, and Commerce & Industry – share nine of these projects, according to the NI-MSME release.

Several States including Gujarat, Orissa, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan have initiated activities for development of MSMEs through cluster approach.

In the next five years, resources worth Rs 3,500-4,000 crore are likely to be invested in cluster development programmes in the country.
