Tiruchi, Jan 23

Tiruchi district has been allotted Rs 50 lakh for preliminary works in the run up to the launch of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme from April 1, the District Collector, Mr Ashish Vachhani, has said. The funds would be utilised for awareness creation, training and exposure visits for panchayat leaders and preparation of job identity cards, he said speaking at the first divisional level training on the scheme for panchayat presidents here.

Village Panchayat presidents and officials could face severe action if any irregularities were detected in the implementation of the scheme. Panchayat presidents would be directly responsible for the implementation of the scheme and they should fully understand the programme guidelines. Contractors are barred from taking up works under the scheme, which aims at providing a minimum of 100 days employment in a year to unemployed rural youth. Use of machinery has also been banned.
