Strategy Canon set to ‘revolutionise’ digital printing industry L.N. Revathy Coimbatore, Jan. 25 Canon India is gearing up to revolutionise the digital printing industry. The company plans to lead the market with technology innovations and enhance the value for its customers in India. “Canon is geared up to take a strong position in this segment by 2010.The market size of Digital Colour Press (a segment of the digital printing industry) is Rs 250 crore and Canon India plans to achieve Rs 35 crore in 2008,” its Vice-President, Mr Alok Bharadwaj, told Business Line. Canon, according to Mr Bharadwaj, registered the highest growth in India, despite a small base of Rs 510 crore. “The growth of 40 to 50 per cent year-on-year has been continuous and sustainable. While industries by and large move towards specialisation to carve a niche, we offer customised solutions and applications to cater to verticals such as telecom, banking, retail and pharmacy,” he said. Growth driversIts four growth engines include Image Communication Products Division (cameras and camcorders, etc), Consumer System Products Division (printers, scanners, all-in-one projectors, etc), Business Imaging Solutions Indirect Division (copiers, faxes, multi-functional devices, large-format printers, Image Press C 7000VP, and so on) and Business Imaging Solution Direct Channel Division. The BIS (Business Imaging Solution) division has recorded the highest growth of 52 per cent. “We plan to add 30 more people in production and graphic arts division. We will be inaugurating the showrooms in Gurgaon, Mumbai and Bangalore with capital investment of Rs 3 crore. An additional Rs 5 crore is budgeted for marketing activities.” Asked if Canon would be hiving off the BIS division into a separate company, he said, “There is no such plan now”. The company is planning to strengthen its presence in the home, SME, large corporate, government and commercial segments with its printing solutions.
