Concor hopes to begin Rourkela cargo terminal work by April

Our Bureau

Kolkata, Jan 25 Container Corporation of India (Concor) hopes to start work on the construction of its domestic cargo terminal at Rourkela shortly, latest by April, and complete it within six months.

To be spread over an area of three to four acres of land and complete with railway lines, container handling and storage facilities, the terminal is expected to handle 16 to 17 rakes a month, mostly outward. The cost is estimated at Rs 5 crore.

Right now, Concor does handle containers, about eight outward rakes per month, at the Rourkela railway goods shed, catering mostly to Rourkela steel plant and a number of mini steel units, sponge iron and pig iron producing factories.

Rising traffic

The traffic throughput is rising, necessitating a full-fledged terminal. However, as the terminal operation is not possible at the goods shed, the empties on railway flats now move into the shed and get loaded manually.

Concor’s terminal at Rourkela will come up on the Railway land. On completion of civil construction, the reach stackers and other handling equipment will be deployed to facilitate unloading and loading of the containers from the flats, stuffing and destuffing, and storage.

There will be storage space for about 200 to 300 containers at the terminal.

Durgapur terminal

Meanwhile, the work on Concor’s Durgapur terminal is in progress. Concor has acquired about 30 acres of land form the local authorities for setting up the terminal estimated to cost Rs 8 crore.

On commissioning, which is expected around July/August, the terminal will handle about 600 containers a month to meet the requirements of the units located in the Durgapur-Asansol industrial belt, according to Concor sources.
