New Projects States - West Bengal JSW Steel to begin work on Salboni unit in March
Our Bureau Kolkata, Jan 25 The construction work at the site of JSW Steel’s proposed greenfield steel plant at Salboni, West Bengal is slated to begin from March this year, according to Mr Sajjan Jindal, Vice-Chairman of the Sajjan Jindal Group. Speaking to newspersons at the Writers’ Buildings here on Friday, after discussing the progress of the project with the West Bengal Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, Mr Jindal said the Chief Minister would soon request the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, to lay the foundation stone of the project next month. LabourHe said about 15,000 workers would be engaged during the construction period. The Industrial Training Institutes at Jhargram and Midnapore would be upgraded in a public-private-partnership mode to train the construction workers appropriately. The Chief Minister has asked the company to engage as many locals as possible during the construction phase. ProjectsAccording to Mr Jindal, the Group had evinced interest in developing a deep sea port in West Bengal. Next month, an agency would be engaged to prepare a detailed study in this regard. The setting up of a deep sea port would entail an investment of Rs 1,000-1,200 crore, he said. Mr Jindal said the JSW Steel Group had already set up a deep sea port in Goa and was currently developing one in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra. The Sajjan Jindal Group is setting up the 10 million tonnes-capacity integrated steel plant at Salboni, near Kharagpur, at an estimated cumulative investment of Rs 35,000 crore.
