TN farmers face peacock menace

Our Bureau

Coimbatore, Jan. 28 The national bird peacock has been the farmers’ woe in rural Coimbatore as they raid farm lands destroying raised crops causing economic loss, the villagers here complained.

“We have stopped raising any food crops in our farms for quite sometime now as peacocks coming in droves simply destroy the crops,” said a farmer Dhanalakshmi of Rayampalayam near Avinashi, about 40 km from here.

The worst affected are those who raise corn or have cultivated horticultural crops. Even the cotton crop is not spared as the peacocks pluck away the cotton bolls causing huge losses, according to Dhanalakshmi.

Velusamy, another farmer from Avinashi, said that most farmers in his village fearing peacocks have chosen now to raise coconut plantations.

Interestingly, these farmers who were present at an interactive session of cotton farmers with Dr M.S. Swaminathan, agricultural scientist, held here recently, had cited peacock menace among the farming distresses and sought a solution.
