Traders to observe hunger strike tomorrow

Our Correspondent

Madurai, Jan. 28 Traders in the State will observe a day-long hunger strike in Chennai on January 30 to protest against the entry of multinational companies and domestic industrial conglomerates into retail business, and allowing foreign direct investment into the country.

The Tamil Nadu Retail Traders Protection Committee Coordinator and the President of Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr S. Rethinavelu, in a statement, said the Union Government should come out with an unequivocal policy of not allowing foreign investment in retail trade even as joint ventures.

The domestic corporates must be curbed from entering into retail trade in grocery, fruits and vegetables and large malls should not resort to selling consumer goods.

A meeting has been sought with the Chief Minister to impress upon the Centre to concede to their demands.

The committee was recently formed by the Chamber and the Tiruchi chapter of Tamil Nadu Traders Federation to protest the entry of retail trade.
