Rice Rice procurement tops 165 lakh tonnes Our Bureau New Delhi, Jan 28 The Food Corporation of India (FCI) and State agencies have managed to procure 165.67 lakh tonnes (lt) of rice during the current 2007-08 marketing season (October-September). This is more than the 164.27 lt purchased in the corresponding period of the preceding season. Progressive procurement has been higher in Andhra Pradesh (20.14 lt versus 17.26 lt), Uttar Pradesh (17.79 lt versus 15.08 lt), Orissa (10.32 lt versus 8.21 lt), Uttaranchal (1.05 lt versus 0.99 lt), Maharashtra (1.00 lt versus 0.79 lt) and Kerala (0.54 lt versus 0.51 lt). The States that have reported a drop in purchases include Punjab (74.60 lt against 75.45 lt), Haryana (15.34 lt against 17.38 lt), Chhattisgarh (21 lt against 21.80 lt), West Bengal (1.53 lt against 1.62 lt) and Bihar (0.99 lt against 1.13 lt). The FCI and State agencies procured 250.75 lt of rice during the entire 2006-07 season, as compared to 276.56 lt, 246.84 lt, 228.28 lt and 164.23 lt in the preceding four seasons.
