To jointly work on drug molecules. The tie-up will focus on aging and cardio disorders. Our Bureau Hyderabad, Jan. 29 Hyderabad-based Institute of Life Sciences (ILS) has inked a memorandum of understanding with the US-based Wistar Institute of Anatomy and Biology to collaborate in discovery research. The ILS and Wistar Institute will jointly work to discover small molecule drug candidates for obesity and diabetes, Dr Javed Iqbal, Director, ILS, told newspersons here on Tuesday, on the sidelines of a one-day symposium on chemical biology organised to mark the first anniversary of ILS. In addition to the drugs for treating obesity and diabetes, the institute, set up in public-private participation mode by Dr Reddy’s Laboratories and Research Foundation, Andhra Pradesh Government and the University of Hyderabad, is also working on anti-aging candidates. “We will work together for discovery and development of compounds targeting proteins known as Sirtuins (known to address problems associated with aging, diabetes and cardio-vascular disorders),” he said. Wistar will provide ILS with information about the chemical structure of sirtuin modulators identified by its in-house research. The ILS would carry out medicinal chemistry to prepare analogues of these modulators to be provided to Wistar for biological testing.
