Jet plans to change top management composition

Ashwini Phadnis

New Delhi, Jan 29 Jet Airways is planning a change in top management composition so as to encourage Indian executives in the company to come forward and work their way up the ladder.

The thinking is that as the airline expands from domestic to international operations, it is necessary to have home-grown talent take up the key slots. This model has been followed successfully by a number of airlines, including some in South-East Asia, which have inducted people as executives and then groomed them to take up more challenging positions globally. The need for a clear succession plan is being felt as the airline’s international operations are growing and it would take time to put in place a system that would be able to meet the growing challenges. The airline hopes to operate to 21 international destinations by the end of the year. Jet Airways, however, is clear that the latest thinking does not mean that it would do away with all expatriates. The move is to encourage Indian talent, give them an opportunity to observe the expat style of functioning and eventually step into their shoes.

“Jet is an Indian airline. Why should only expatriates be in top positions? We are putting in place a system that would encourage and recognise home-grown talent, escalate and reward outstanding performers by giving them top-level responsible positions,” the airline Executive Vice-President, Commercial, Mr Sudheer Raghavan, told Business Line.
