Cabinet nod for Tamil institute

New Delhi, Jan. 30

A Central Institute of Classical Tamil will be set up in Chennai, with the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Mr M. Karunanidhi, as its ex-officio Chairman. The Cabinet on Wednesday approved a sum of Rs 76.32 crore to be spent on setting up the institute over a period of four years. It gave its nod for the allocation of 17 acres of land, free of cost from the Government of Tamil Nadu, for the purpose of building the CICT. It would be set up with 100 per cent recurring and non-r ecurring costs to be borne by the Union Government. The main objective of this decision would be for the preservation and development of Classical Tamil which is an integral part of India’s composite heritage, an official release said.
