Climate & Weather Westerly troughs may take a break Vinson Kurian Thiruvananthapuram, Feb. 1 The western Himalayan region is expected to witness light to moderate snowfall for at least five days from Saturday as a fresh western disturbance canters in across the northwest border. With the system moving into India, a high-pressure region is expected to drop anchor across the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, preventing the advance of low-pressure systems and western disturbances for sometime. COLD TO HOLDBut the cold to average cold conditions in north and northwest India are set to continue through the month, according to prognostications by most weather models. This is expected to aid the cause of the orderly growth and propagation of the standing Rabi paddy. The incoming western disturbance will impact northwest and adjoining central India from Saturday night onwards, causing isolated to scattered rain or thundershowers over the northern plains for three days, an India Meteorological Department forecast said on Friday. SNOWFALLThe warmer southwesterly winds associated with the system will help the severe cold wave conditions prevailing over northwest and central India and Maharashtra. Snowfall is likely at many places over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Rain or thundershowers are likely at a few places over Punjab, north Haryana and Chandigarh and isolated over the rest of the region. Light rain or thundershowers are likely at a few places over Rajasthan and west Madhya Pradesh. Isolated rain has been forecast for the North-east. A trough extending from south Orissa to south Tamil Nadu on Friday lay aligned from coastal Andhra Pradesh to south Tamil Nadu across Rayalaseema and south interior Karnataka. This trough will cause isolated rain or thundershowers coastal Andhra Pradesh, parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. More Stories on : Climate & Weather
