Events States - Maharashtra Plumbing norms to be updated S. Shanker Mumbai, Feb 1 The Indian Plumbing Association (IPA) is all set release an “updated” version of the parameters relating to plumbing in the National Building Code at its ‘Indian Plumbing Conference’ here beginning on February 11. CodeThe code, developed by the IPA and the US-based International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials takes into consideration new materials, technology and the latest installation practices followed in advanced countries in recent times.“The National Building Code on plumbing is outdated as it does not speak of modern materials. Besides a multitude of new materials, we now have 10 plastic and two metal pipe varieties, while it was GI alone when the code was formulated,” said Mr Gurmit Singh, Chairman of the Mumbai IPA Chapter. OutdatedThe National Building Code of India (NBC) was first published in 1970 at the instance of Planning Commission and then revised in 1983. Three major amendments were issued— two in 1987 and the third in 1997. Later, a revised NBC was brought out as National Building Code of India 2005. Green TechToday, plumbing should be looked as a segment from supply to discharge, encompassing treatment at both ends. The industry has made great advancements and hydro-pneumatic pumps now ensure delivery of hot water in three seconds in the hotels and hospitals from the central circulatory system. Techniques and practices adopted in green buildings result in near zero discharge of waste water, as treated water is recycled and sent back into the system, he said. New LabUnderstanding the need for skilled labour in the realty market, the IPA and US plumbing association have got together to offer quality plumbing practice education in India. The IAPO will set up a facility in Bangalore and coordinate with its Indian counterpart to launch a nationwide programme. Mr Singh said the association had already signed a MoU with the College of Engineering Pune, to offer a programme on plumbing. Rs 1 crore laboratory equipped with the latest materials, was being established at the college. The institution was also considering formulating a course with plumbing as the elective subject.
