Ahmedabad, Feb. 1 In a sudden move, the Union Ministry of Shipping ordered late last evening the removal of all four senior-most officials of Kandla Port Trust (KPT) in Gujarat from their respective posts, with immediate effect, following their alleged involvement in corrupt practices and unduly providing port facility to select private players.

The Ministry also directed Dr G S Rao, Chief Operations Manager, Vadinar Offshore Oil Terminal, to assume temporary charge in place of the Chairman, Mr Ambati Janardhana Rao, until further orders. A KPT spokesman told Business Line from Kandla over phone that Dr Rao took charge today.

This is said to be first instance of its kind in India wherein such a wholesale reshuffle has taken place in the top management at any of the dozen-odd major ports on a single day.

The spokesman said Mr Ambati Janardhana Rao has been transferred to the Ministry in New Delhi, pending posting. Mr Manoranjan Kumar, Deputy Chairman, has been relieved of his charge and reverted to his parent cadre in the Ministry while sanctioning the two-and-a-half-month leave he was reported to have applied for.

Mr A. Krishnan, in-charge, Financial Advisor and Chief Accounts Officer, has been stripped of this charge and would remain Deputy Financial Advisor and Deputy Chief Accounts Officer while Mr A K Gadkari, Chief Mechanical Engineer, has been transferred to Chennai Port.
